Updating to a new version

How to take an update without losing your homepage and settings.

Never upload a new version over the theme you are currently using.

Your homepage layout, section settings, colours and copy are not part of the theme's code. They live in the copy of the theme you customised, in the files Shopify calls templates/*.json and config/settings_data.json. Uploading a new version on top replaces those with ours, and there is no undo. This is true of every Shopify theme, not only Krevia.

Install alongside instead

  • Upload the new zip — it arrives unpublished, so your live store keeps running
  • Rebuild your customisations there, or copy them across section by section with the old theme open in another tab
  • Preview properly, on a phone as well as a desktop
  • Publish only when you're satisfied
  • Keep the old theme for a week before deleting it — it is your rollback

What stays stable between versions

Setting IDs never change between versions, and that's enforced by a build gate. A setting you configured in one version means the same thing in the next, which is what makes copying your configuration across predictable.
